Music as a Mother Tongue

SUZUKI METHOD

The Suzuki Method is called the “mother tongue” method, because it is patterned after the way a child naturally learns his or her native language. Suzuki students often start young, because of their amazing adaptability to their environment at this age, but students of any age are encouraged to learn. Parent and teacher work to create a nurturing environment for the child to learn in, both in the lesson and at home. Just as a child learns to speak by listening, the first and most important aspect of Suzuki training is listening to music from an early age. The child is surrounded by music constantly, listening to recordings daily to internalize the language of music. In addition, the child has fun learning experiences with peers in regular group classes.

Every Child Can

Dr. Shinichi Suzuki saw great significance in a fact that most people take for granted – that children can speak their native language without difficulty. To learn to speak a language, especially one as nuanced as Japanese, is a great accomplishment. And yet, Dr. Suzuki noticed that children who grow up in Japan have no difficulty in speaking Japanese. For him, this challenged the idea that talent is inborn. If every child can speak his or her mother tongue, every child also has the ability to learn music with just as much skill, given the proper environment. This is one of the most fundamental components of the Suzuki Method.
